Par T Weekend
Monday, June 3rd, 2002 02:47 pmEn sabado, fue a la casa excelente de Tor para una fiesta de geek. Their back yard is awesome, I had a couple good alcoholic beverages, and had interesting conversations from Latin perl to TITAN with folks connected, in some way and for the most part, to the CS lab. Afterwords, I accompanied a drunk girl to the park for swinging and conversations about artificial intelligence, psycholinguistics, a campus coffee shop she used to run, and The Lords of Misrule. Walking from Eben G. Fine to North Boulder we talked about myth, whether one can think in language (my position and expeience) or whether one thinks in images and translates to language (her position and experience), whether or not I'm too interesting to be an engineer, and other associated things. I realized that my mind really does think linguistically -- when I can't think of a noun, I have a mental conception of the object's function or a description of it, not a picture like some folks do. But we already knew that I'm a left brain-dominant individiaul.
On Sunday, my long-time friend Brendan and his long-time girlfriend Allison got married. Since she's a UU and he's an athiest, the ceremony was pretty cool (aside from them being in the sun while the rest of us were in the shade), especially given the view from Flagstaff. At the reception, I got to catch up with some folks I hadn't seen in ages like Matt Sturtz, seminal socially challenged computer geek, who amazingly enough has had a girlfriend for an extended period of time; Rowan Rozanski and Carolyn Torpy, girl geeks from middle school; and Evan Salem, friend from elementary school, who I didn't recognize since he recently had chemotherapy. I need to get around to purchasing a unicycle and ride with him this summer.
Brendan's friends put together an after-party at his house (after failing to put together a bachelor party and not buying alcohol until Sunday, when only 3.2 was available), which was a grand time. I discovered that it's easier to eat five saltines in a minute one-by-one (or two-by-two) rather than all at once, and we learned that Russell could drink 3 Mountain Dews in a minute on top of a bunch of beer, pot, and pizza and not puke. Plenty of non-consumption-related fun as well, making fun of those that deserved it, lots of well wishing, and good conversations.
So. Congratulations to Brendan and Allison, the third marriage of friends my age.
I've now got a bunch of folks I need to hang out with over the summer and lots of time to do so. Now the only challenge is to see if my social skills are good enough to pull it off.
All appologies to those who have come to expect protracted philosophizing from this journal. I'll record my thoughts on The Alphabet vs. The Goddess soon.
