Though I only heard about it a couple days ago, I went to see Margaret Cho at The Flatirons Theater this evening. Though it was a free show, the planners encouraged people to get tickets a couple hours before the show, since they anticipated a sell-out. They were close to correct -- when I arrived there after initiating another crop of Tau Bates, the line for the door an hour before the show was about a block and a half long. I'm betting the news got onto some GLBT email lists, because Margaret's fagnetic powers pulled in all the queers on campus and then some, I think.

It wasn't a standup show per se. She talked some about her life (which I'd already heard from her movie), being Asian when people are trying to be politically correct, and other political and personal ideas, goals, and experiences. Of course, there were bits of standup work in there... she told her mom's story and theory about being gay (when your friend tells you he loves you, don't punch him in the face), her "MY NAME IS GWEN AND I'M HERE TO WAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOSH YOUR VAGINA" bit, and an imitation of her high school drag queen friends. Immediately after that immitation, the theater blew a fuse, shutting off the stage lights and the mic, which led her to say that those friends had died, and she'd always thought of them as her drag queen guardian angels, and that maybe they were saying "Hey, that's not flattering!" But the main thrust of her talk was being true to yourself, for the most part. For example... her high school drag queen friends would go to Hagen Dasz (sp) and one would stick an ice cream cone up the other's ass. The customers couldn't figure out what to make of it (*insert Margaret Cho facial expression sequence*). She talked about how people have odd (not exactly racist) reactions to Asian-Americans ("I don't go around asking white people 'Where are you from? France? Canada? Sweden? Huh?' because I assume they're American") as distinct from Asian ("Jackie Chan and Chow Yun Fat are great... [but] it's hard for an Asian to get in a movie unless you have special powers"), and that she shouldn't have to be seen as an Ambassador of Asian People or anything. She then answered audience questions (almost all of which came from queers), encouraging them to work together, among other things. Two good friends, a fag with Mormon parents and a dyke with Jewish parents, stood up and said that I'm the One I Want had kept them from killing themselves, and generally given them hope. In response to another guy's question, she said "It's hard to be gay anywhere, but you're at altitude, so it's harder." And lots of other wonderful stuff. So yay for fag hags, yay for queers, yay for politics with humor, yay for sensible self-image.

In other news, my Cube broke about a week after I got it, but Mike's done some work on it and I bought a new power supply from Apple, so I should have my baby back and functioning in a few days. May the blessing of blowjobs fall upon Mike. I'm really noticing now the inabilities of my 233Mhz G3 rev 1. It's okay, though baby, I still love you. I'm just excited about this new family member too.

I have way too many things to do in the next two weeks. Not the least of which is to find my library book so that I can finish it and write 8,000 words by next Monday. Not to mention plan Beltaine, finish TITAN, prepare a convention bid, find a job, and check most of my residents out in a very short amount of time. As well as a gazillion and one other little things. For some reason, I'm fairly productive when I have too much to do, but if I just have to do one thing, it never gets done. Some psych/business theorist needs to make a theory that uses me as a key data point. But don't expect another long journal post from me in the near future.

Once again, I'm just jealous as all fuck. But that's ok, maybe I'll get to see her live someday too, Mr. Smartypants. ;)
on other notes- G4 Cube? Yeah also jealous about that. But go you. Cool stuff. I'm talking to my parents about my 21st birthday coming up (only about a month left of minority-hood! woo hoo.) and I'm thinking of asking for a Palm. They're so spiffy, and there's free Japanese software for them that I've seen. Kanji dictionaries etc. Which would be GREAT. Still not a cube, but whatever. You're just specialer than I. am. Huzzah for antiquated British grammar.
Finally, on Moby 18, how is it?? I haven't heard anything off of it yet, and I'm dying to know if it's as good as Play. Is it? huh? huh? huh?
