Wheeeeeeee!

Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] mlechan and I and my family sojourned to the Temple Events Center in Denver for the Winter Solstice Revels. As always, they were a complete blast. I got a big balloon jester hat and MLE got angel wings (and I may even post pictures). Excellent storytelling and puppet shows for the kids. Humorous Christmas versions of Riders on the Storm (about the birth of Christ), White Rabbit (o/~ One box is bigger / and the other is quite small `|o), and Stairway to Heaven (There's a lady who's sure / all that glitters is gold / and she's buying her presents on eBay / At midnight she knows / That the stores are all closed / And with a click she can get what she came for ... Half off on books her brother won't read / Sometimes all of her gifts are misgiven...). Something of a meta-mummer's play, which I thought was worse than the plays for the last few years, but still humorous. And it managed to incorporate the sword dancing. Morris dancing (another fine queer product of England) Lots of dancing, and MLE and I managed to have fun dancinc and neither of us got hurt or particularly overheated. And, of course, the haunting Abbot's Bromley Horn Dance. The whole day was mmm, mmm, Dan Singz.

"Ready Angels?" "Ready, Cronos!" Tor's excited about our project and wants to play. We're excited and want to code. Zach doesn't care too much about the few errors in our slides.

The stats final I was dreading all month? E-Z as pi. YAY.

As a done-with-finals present to myself, I watched the 3:45 Lord of the Rings showing. The one with all the giggling middleschoolers dropping stuff, getting up to get more popcorn, and generally being juvenile. But that's okay, because YAY! Yay! YAY! The movie was very well done. Lots of attention to detail. Lots of beautiful real shots. Appropriately paced (yay slow films!). And butt-ugly orcs.

There were a few changes and missings parts from the book that were a bit disappointing. The lack of Tom Bombadil doesn't hurt the plot, but gets a big frowny face. Maybe they'll make a Tom Bombadil short sometime. The sequence inside the Prancing Pony was altered for the worse, I felt. I didn't catch the "All that glitters" line, either, though it could have been there. Arwen's early presence was appropriately kept fairly low-key and didn't hurt things much. And according to IMDb, they didn't combine Arwen and Éowyn, which makes me pleased. I'll definitely pay another theater visit or two for this baby. Maybe I'll try to reread Fellowship over break too.

Yesterday I felt sick, and managed to waste time well enough. Picked up An Oni is Furry, with some decent rare luck. I also got two starters from Decipher's Lord of the Rings TCG. It looks like it's really "Lord of the Rings: The Movie: The Collectible Card Game." I can tell that it gives significantly less freedom in creating decks and telling stories than MECCG did. I hear the mechanics for this one are pretty good, though, so I'll give it a try at least. (Not that I minded most of the rules for MECCG. The games took a long time, sure, but so did the books!)

I also managed to make use of my shuper ha bandwidth while it lasts, downloading several gigs. After my resident's 10.1 update CD smegged my X partition. Twice. Yay reinstalling!

Up at 8 this morning to check through all of my residents' rooms. Fortunately most of them followed directions and unplugged anything. And the only dumb things left around were some rather perishable foods. (Did you really plan to eat those two slices of pizza when you got back? How about this one piece of chocolate cake?)

Home again home again, jiggity gig. All night solstice party/ritual tonight. Wheeeeeeeeeee!
