I learned last week that I'll be in Philadelphia for work next Sunday through Thursday afternoon.

Poking around on some maps, there are several positive qualities to this. First, I like a city where you don't have to drive. Our client is at City Hall, my hotel is a few blocks away. Second, I like a city where a mall isn't just about shopping. A few blocks in the other direction from the hotel is Independence Mall. (Of course, the museums are only open during business hours...) Third, I like a city with funk. The area around Independence Mall dates back to the 17th Century -- there's bound to be some funk built up in that time. Plus, apparently Chinatown is between the hotel and the mall... { ♩ I want to take you to Chinatown! ♩ }

So what I'd like to know (from those of you that know) -- what should I make sure to see in the City of Brotherly Love given (a) I'll be at work during the day and (b) I'm allergic to Philly Cheese Steak...

The liberty bell, perhaps. You should definitely get a picture taken of you running up the stairs featured prominently in Rocky.

I am thinking that your trip may overlap with [livejournal.com profile] quijax's trip to Philadelphia. This might mean that we should get together for food sometime on Sunday. Please send contact info. I have no advice as I have never been to Philadelphia either.

If the journal post about arriving on the 27th is accurate, we won't, as I leave the 25th.

The Franklin Institute is an excellent place for science-related exhibits.

The Art Museum, besides allowing you to recreate Rocky's stair-dash, is pretty awesome. I prefer it to the Met in NYC.

If you can't eat a cheesesteak, try a soft pretzel. They're best (I kid you not) bought fresh from under the armpit of some guy on a corner.

If you want history, there's a cemetary just off the mall where Ben Franklin and some other prominent Americans are buried. Also, the National Constitution Center, which just opened (and is a client of mine, lol) has a couple of great exhibits.

The zoo is also world-class, tho I haven't been there in years.
