I became a St. Louis Cardinals fan in 1985. When I was 5, I was really in to birds and baseball. The American League Championship Series featured the Blue Jays versus the Royals while the National League Championship Series featured the Cardinals versus the Dodgers. In my particular five-year-old way, I wanted the Jays and the Cards to win, and if they did, I wouldn't care who won the World Series. The Jays didn't hold up their end, so I became a Cardinals fan.
The Cards lost the 85 series in seven games. They again lost in seven games to the Twins two years later. So losing the first three games in this year's Series to the Red Sox makes me worried that they may have dropped into choke mode.
However, in between Cardinal appearances, the Red Sox faced the Mets. They were up 3 games to two in extra innings with two outs. A dribbler up the first base line would have been a routine play -- pick up the ball and step on the bag. But aging Bill Buckner couldn't bend over all the way, giving the Mets the win and ensuring the Curse of the Bambino continues.
Now perhaps the Sox' eight errors in the first two games means they've gotten it out of their system, but I say there's always time for somebody to pull a Buckner.
Those who have wondered where I've gone need not worry. I've been busy at work and spending most of the rest of my time at my girlfriend's apartment, which doesn't have Internet. However, we'll be moving in together in the middle of November, and I will make an attempt to increase the frequency of my updates.
