Hey Denver/Boulder folks:

Colorado School of Mines E-Days fireworks are at 9 PM on Thursday. These are probably the best fireworks in the state all year, surpassing any 4th of July or sporting event display. Some of the best explosions are usually close to the ground on the Mines football field, but if you want to avoid the crowd of drunk engineering students you'll have a good vantage point from one of the parks at the west end of 10th St. Lookout Mountain probably has a pretty good view too, though I can't vouch for it.

Directions, but don't try to park on campus. (There should be plenty of parking around 12th/13th and Washington/Jackson).

My E-Days fireworks pictures from a few years ago. Pardon the fact that several need to be rotated or deleted.

Housing Frustration

Well crap.

We'd submitted applications and provided verbal agreement to rent a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom duplex in the Heritage area of Golden. Biking distance from work. Walking distance from a mountain. Garage space. Awesome property manager. But our friend who was going to rent with us decided it wouldn't work for her. I don't blame her -- she calculated 250 miles driving per week; I'm not sure why she was down with the idea of a place in Golden when she works in Parker. Tam was concerned with me paying the full rent while she's in school. It's not going to work for the two of us.

If you wants to live there with us for $400 or less a month, drop me a line real soon. If you have a place you'd like to rent in with reasonable reachability for Denver West, let me know. Our lease is up at the end of June, but I'll be in California for the last week of June so I'd like to move by the weekend of the 15th. We could probably extend our current lease by a month, though.

I'm feeling really annoyed because I put a bunch of energy into finding a place that I won't live in. I'll need to spend at least as much energy again finding a different place to live, and this may disrupt what I wanted to do this weekend.

I did have a reaction like this when I learned that my first Golden apartment is for rent again. I'm considering that as an option, though a few things make it less attractive.

Yesterday's forecast was for "rain in the metro area, snow in the mountains." But in the clouds and all-day downpour it wasn't clear how disturbingly accurate that was.

This morning I began my commute by heading west from suburbia. The arched backs of the foothills were white, dotted by evergreen trees drying off from a shower. The front-most hills were merely sprinkled with powdered sugar, a green sweet loaf waiting for a hiker's dessert. The aptly named Red Rocks Amphitheater spread its auburn wavelength proudly, reminding passersby that soon the benches would replace the sky's deposit of snow with rock fans raising their arms and cries in a heavenly direction.

Heading north, I saw that Green Mountain had been rechristened White Mountain, a smooth blob of shortening atop seasonally lush green fields, the snow stopping approximately as the slope leveled. The drive up C-470 was not unlike a summer trip up Trail Ridge, but instead of passing the enchanting timber line I instead crossed an eerie snow line -- for a hundred yards the right side of the highway kissed the gossamer snow sheet.

The mountains stretched north from Golden, a white wall delineating the watered daily world from the snow-covered land of adventure. But Golden's guard to the east, South Table Mountain, sat resplendent in its green dress, not a speck of dandruff to be seen.

Some say that on Samhain the veil between the worlds is thinnest, that we may catch a glimpse to the other side. Yet this morning, early Beltane season, I have passed through the very edge of winter as I passed from one point of spring to another. Perhaps masculine and feminine are not blue and pink but white and green.
