"Ill armed and half starved, they were still desperate men, to whom danger had lost all fears: for what was death that they should shun it to cling to such a life as theirs?" -- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The White Company

"Beware of dangerous ground. Beware moreso of men desperate enough to cross it." -- Master Suana, L5R

"Do not be wary of men who take risks with titles and lands, be wary of men who have nothing to lose." -- L5R (anyone remember Hisa from IE?)

John F. Burns, the chief foreign correspondant for the New York Times was on Charlie Rose tonight. Near the end, he said that most of the resistance in Iraq is coming from Baathists "Who really have nothing to lose." That is, they can't just try to live normal post-war Iraqi lives for fear of arrest, retribution, or whatever. So I wonder -- would it be possible to give them something to lose, and could that stop the fighting? My mom suggested we find an island for them somewhere and they can all be President and General and what have you.

Incidentally, Charlie Rose is a great show. Many of his interviews last a whole hour, and even when he talks to several people in one show, they all have time to lay out their whole gig, talk about where their domain is going, and so forth. It's a refreshing alternative to sound bites and two minute quickies on nightly newscasts. Check your local PBS listings.

"Now" with Bill Moyers is also one of my favorites. I think it is on channel 6 at 9 on Friday nights... good for taping.
