I just read about How Digital Cameras work, which largely confirmed what I'd assumed. I'm considering buying one, but the potential field is rather vast, so I'd appreciate any input My Adoring Readers would care to provide. Are there manufacturers that are really good or hella lame? Are there models that are particularly well designed? Are there PDAs that incorporate a non-POS camera? Or vice versa?

I'm a long way from a professional photographer, so I'm definitely shooting for something in the low end (< $500). I don't see turning pictures into any analog medium (hence a digital camera), but image quality at web (and possibly desktop picture) resolutions is important. I'm most interested in taking pictures of interesting natural and found phenomena, so the as much of the subject's beauty should show through. (I.e. I'm not taking pictures of people standing in front of famous landmarks, in which one mostly cares that I was here is conveyed.) The desire for such a purpose comes in large part from this Post-Graduation American Journey idea I've been incubating for some time. As such, long battery life and high storage capacity are key. Nothing like running out of pictures in New Mexico because you took too many in Texas.

Be seeing you.

My friend who likes to look at digital cameras and their evolution recommends this website for reviews of various digital cameras. The reviews are really detailed he said. I've known people with the Nikon, Olympus, Fuji, and Sony cameras. They all seemed really nice, but I can't really quantify what was cool about them.

The sony was the F-707 which is over your budget. It had laser beams and shit, but it was limited to using stuff like the Sony memory which evolves at a different rate than the memory stuff for other cameras. It sucks to want to take 100 pictures and only have room for 30. Anyway, good luck, and please let us know what you go with.
