Yeah, this is a great example of why early intervention is important. One of the LA Times articles said he sent his mom some emails in early 2021 saying that "UCLA gave me schizophrenia," so maybe he'd received a diagnosis but wasn't pursuing treatment. I can also imagine that the everyone's-at-home isolation during the pandemic would've compounded his mental health challenges while also making it harder for peers to notice that he was having trouble and needed help.
