And why is it that when I feel gregarious, I usually feel equally comfortable by myself?

In the book "The Secret Garden" (where I first learned the word "wic" means "alive"), the maid Martha says to the little girl Mary something very much like, "Thou'rt allas goin on abou' 'thou dost not like this one' and 'thou dost not like that one.' Tell me: how dost thou feel about thysel'?"

Barry Neil Kaufman says, "Being lonely is being unhappy about being alone. Being alone is just being alone." It only makes sense that, if you're happy, you're happy with yourself and with others, and when you're unhappy, you're unhappy with yourself and with others. "With" and "alone" are not the base states here.
