Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 01:31 amThe Sadducees believed in total textual authority of the original Torah. The Pharisees added the history of law decisions. It would make sense to see Jesus as a rebel advocating for non-textual authority through direct experience. Insofar as the gospels quote him citing scripture, it's because he was arguing with people who insisted that the only truth was in the book.
