You Have to Laugh At Yourself
Friday, May 21st, 2004 11:37 pmOne problem with the world doesn't receive enough attention. Too many people take themselves seriously.
This observation is especially true in business. I find that companies which have fun at their own expense produce better products. I would love to see more April Fools participation on the web.
I therefore find OK Cupid a lot of fun because they make jabs at their product all the time. I particularly like their light hearted MMPI-style sexuality/relationship quiz. (I'm flwyd, the Boy Next Door, by the way.) They're able to combine their mirth with a quality product (matching by maximum entropy! love, geek style!). I find that the questions the site presents help me clarify in my own mind what my "ideal match" would be. And then there's the questions like this:
Which aspect of the salmon life cycle best corresponds with your current state in life? I'm a(n)...
() fry; eating in the stream where I was born.
() smolt; moving on to life in the big ocean.
() adult; fully developed, living in salt water.
() spawner; with young, dead.
The LJ quiz crowd needs to make more offbeat quizzes like this one. "What irregular verb are you?"
