Watching the AFC championship, I realized how good John Elway was. 98 yard drives with two minutes left. Pacing. Rhythm. Complete awareness of the field. Control of the game. A disappointed Marty Schottenheimer in a Cleveland snow storm.

Jake Plummer has big shoes to fill. He had some impressive moments. But it seemed like he was trying too hard to make the magic happen. Heroes are born when they do an exceptional job in exceptional circumstances. But when a person tries to be a hero, it's easy to find exceptions. Or interceptions, as the case may be.

I don't follow football, but even I've noticed the continuing references to "the Broncos-without-Elway". Like that's the name of the team.

Yes, those two paragraphs are closely related.

It's just as well...

You know that if they had gone all the way to the superbowl, it would just have been a repeat of the late 80's Redskins/Broncos 53 to 3 debacle.

Yeah, but now every time someone gets behind in the Super Bowl Denver gets a nod when the announcers say "The largest deficit ever overcome in a Super Bowl was when the Redskins came from 10-0 to beat the Broncos 42-10." If only we could've extended that record to coming back from a 17 or even 21 point deficit! If only, man, if only!
