Happy birthday Seth. Thanks for always being entertaining.

Of interest to those interested in Samurai drama (which is, perhaps, almost everyone reading this), I watched an... odd movie last night. It's called Gohatto (Taboo). It's set in a shogun-era militia. It's got the requisite sparring scenes, pictures of samurai sitting cross-legged in contemplation, etc. But the film's mainly about a gay recruit and the other samurai that want to get in his kimono. The film is interesting to watch, but like good psychodrama, doesn't say everything explicitly. I walked out afterwords with one of those "Huh. Okay." feelings.

Of interest to fewer people reading this, I also saw Aria, a collection of 10 short films by top independent directors (Robert Altman, Jean-Luc Godard, etc.) set to arias from various operas (Verdi, Wagner, etc.). Coming in, I wasn't even aware that aria were necessarily love-related. The pieces ranged from humorous (a movie producer and his wife both sneak out on each other and go to the same theme hotel) to commentarious (two women in various states of undress try to get the attention of big burly guys in a weight room) to the beautifully sad (two teens make love and commit suicide in vegas) to the surreally beautiful (a woman in the operating room's delusions of being dressed in jewels in ancient Egypt). A wonderful example of the language-independent idea conveyance and beauty of film and song. I left wishing I had a girlfriend with whom I could be tragically in love.
