What would the world be like if, several decades ago, Texas had seceeded from the U.S.? Would Dubya be president of Texas? If he were, would Texas be waging war against the Middle East? What would be the condition of Mexico->Texas immigrants? How bad would the air in Houston be? What would be the most restrictive law? How many people would have been put to death? Murdered? What rights would alleged criminals have? What would the Lone Star Country's chief exports be? How much tourism would they get? What would life be like in the border towns of New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana? How much legal segregation would there be? How much social segregation? Would it provide a large boon to the American tourist industry? What would be the emigration rate from Texas? The immigration rate from the U.S.? How many currently species would no longer be present?

Sounds like the plotbunny for a book I'd love to read. Provided someone else wrote it...

Well, Texas did try this once, and the US government broke the law and forced them back in. I doubt they'd give it a go again. Interesting, tho. You'd probably end up with a country not unlike America in the 1890s, where individuals were able to succeed on a grand scale, or fail miserably and be forced into near-serfitude.
