Well, now that I've gotten that off my chest, I can update as things happen.

I saw Blue Velvet tonight at IFS. It provides an engaging, creepy mystery plot told through provocative and carefully chosen shots and a color pallette which turns late-'50s imagery to frank spookiness and written with corny dialog which set the house a giggle several times. While the plot is easy to follow, the psychology and motivations of several characters (including one of Dennis Hopper's signature weirdos) is rather foggy. And while the dialog is almost B movie quality (A- movie quality, perhaps), I found that it helped, rather than hindered, the movie. I found the color similar to that of Little Shop of Horrors or Rocky Horror Picture Show, two movies which used gaudy color effectively, though Blue Velvet's colors were a little more subtle.
