... and a bottle of rum
Sunday, May 23rd, 2004 02:17 amUnlike some genres, a good pirate movie has all the elements of a bad pirate movie. There's swashbuckling, explosions, witty dialog, special effects, hot women, ugly men, and swell costumes. A good pirate movie just does these things better.*
When you have a big budget and the freedom to make a bad movie, you have a lot of leeway to make a great movie. Especially when all that's asked of you is swashbuckling, explosions, witty dialog, special effects, hot women, ugly men, and swell costumes.
Pirates are the perfect tool for jokes and joviality because political correctness doesn't play a role. Nobody cares if you make fun of pirates, dress up in stereotypical pirate fashion, and accentuate every arrrrr and ayyyye. Your movie will not be boycotted by the Pirate Anti-Defamation League and nobody at the party will say your jokes have gone too far unless you mistake a lady for a wench. Pirates are naught but good, safe fun.
Yes, I just watched PAYErates of the CARRibean for the first time. As in school, so in life -- I often don't get to things in a timely matter, but if it's important, I will make them happen.
Edit, recalling what else I wanted to say: I may be the only person who has ever walked out of a store with Pirates of the Carribean and by brakhage: an anthology in the same bag. I <3 The Video Station.
* Some genres are not so lucky. Good dramas are not bad dramas done well; no amount of brilliance will turn a soap opera into a Casablanca. Unfortunately, sufficient incompetence can turn a Casablanca into a soap opera.
