I just had a thought... what's the status of alligators in southeast Louisiana? Did they all get washed out to sea? Are they swimming in flood waters? Did the people who climbed into their attics have to contend with gators in their kitchens when they came back down? Or has enough swampland been destroyed around New Orleans that the ancient reptiles had to evacuate the city long ago?

I can only imagine how many pets have died along the gulf coast last week.

I remember seeing on tv (I can't remember if it was on a local station before I left Gulfport or since then on CNN or something) a guy who had rescued some people stuck in their car in the floodwaters where there was a big alligator in the water next to where they were taping, but apparently when he was rescuing the people there was a much bigger alligator very nearby. I want to say this was somewhere in Jackson County, MS, but I'm not sure. It was near an alligator farm, one of those tourist attraction type places.

In New Orleans proper there shouldn't really be many, if any wild alligators. However just east of the city, in Chalmette and surrounding areas, there were lots of swamp tour locations and once on the interstate out there my mom saw an alligator trying to walk across the interstate.

I have friends staying where I am at now in Dallas who just arrived here late last night after only escaping New Orleans at daybreak yesterday. They do not have many words to describe all of the horror they witnessed firsthand, and I haven't been asking them about details because I don't want to push them on it, so I'm not sure if they might know anything about alligators or other animals.

I know they were warning about poisonous snakes and open manholes in the floodwater, but not gators or crocs.
