Since maildir looks like the best way to support both IMAP and mh-style commands, I converted my mbox files to maildir format. I also added all of my home IPs to sendmail's access file so that I can send mail without hassle on the "get things to work first, do them right later" principle.

I'm growing to like Mail.app. It was attractive enough at the outset to embark on this whole "stop using MH folders so IMAP will work" project. Some nice things about Mail.app:
  • convenient searching (I've been searching MH folders like grep phone Mail/inbox/12??? with the guess that the message is between 12000 and 13000).
  • clicking on a message will highlight similar messages (e.g. cron error messages from the same program).
  • more difficult foot shooting (I accidentally typed refile 1056-14061 +spam today, which moves most of my inbox to my spam folder...).
  • immediate visual feedback about which folders have new mail (maybe now I'll participate on mailing lists).
Aside from the main disadvantage, it only runs at home, the biggest problem with Mail.app so far is that it doesn't put me in vim to compose the email. Of course, since it's MacOS X I can always write my mail in vim and then drag it to the message. And I can write an AppleScript to insert my random signature. And until that point, I can just run my sign perl script and drag-n-drop it in.

E-mail has become as American as child molestation.
