Join Diaspora

Diaspora, a distributed, privacy-conscious social network is in alpha release. I signed up today (user ID < 50,000) and there's definitely a lot of room for feature growth, which on the plus side means it's a really clean and simple interface. But the most important feature of a social network is having people you want to share with, so if you're interested in an invite, let me know.

Last I heard about this project was that its code was pre-released or leaked a few months back, and that its insides were rubbish (which I'm willing to accept is just backseat driving, since coders are a critical bunch). But specifically that it had poor security, which counts for a lot IMO.

Had you heard this / do you know if any real problems that were identified have been addressed?

The code was officially released, and I think they sent initial investors a version on CD (as a souvenir, not because it's a good distribution system for source code for an evolving website).

I haven't followed the project depth, but they've had several months to incorporate the feedback from the initial release, so hopefully it's a lot better today, regardless of how good it was on initial release.
