does anyone reading this know what a Catholic Christmas service is like?

Depends on the church. The ones I went to usually featured somewhere between half an hour and an hour of choral carols beforehand, and then a very trad service, possibly with a bit more extravagance of ritual than usual.

It's usually quite pleasant in a borstal sort of way, especially in a really big honkin' cathedral.
